Is there any validity to the practice of music therapy as treatment for Alzheimer's disease? The answer, found through my research, is yes. Music therapy has countless benefits towards helping those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. There are physiological, mental, and emotional improvements seen in Alzheimer's patients that participate in music therapy programs.

In my most recent research, I found a blog post that clarifies and expands on my post "Research using "Site Operator"- Music Therapy". In a study done called the "Efficacy of Music Therapy in Treatment for the Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease" hormone levels in Alzheimer's patients were recorded both with and without music therapy. This study follows 6 Alzheimer's patients and measures their 17β-estradiol and testosterone hormone levels. The secretion of these two hormones has been found to prevent some of the negative effects of Alzheimer's disease.

One of the major concerns of caregivers for dementia patients, especially those with Alzheimer's disease, is the potential of weight loss due to insufficient caloric intake. This phenomena is mostly due to an eating environment that can cause the Alzheimer's patient stress. Nursing homes and care facilities have started utilizing music therapy to make dementia patients more comfortable with their surroundings to promote more food consumption. A study done by ESHA Research followed 12 Alzheimer's patients over the course of 24 meals.

The most interesting thing I have learned in my research so far is the idea of assigning Alzheimer's patients "developmental ages". Those that study Alzheimer's disease have found that people who suffer from the disease lose their abilities in order of which they acquire them during childhood. These skills include the ability to hold a job, handle their finances, dress and bathe themselves, control their bladder and bowel function, and speak. A new way about thinking of Alzheimer's disease is that it is a "backward march through development".

Music therapy is defined as "the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program". I have learned that within the music therapy profession there are several types of certified music therapists. These types of registered music therapists include Music Therapists-Board Certified (MT-BC), Registered Music Therapists (RMT), Certified Music Therapists (CMT), and Advanced Certified Music Therapists (ACMT).

In the first stage of my research, I began exploring what first inspired me to choose the effects of music on Alzheimer's disease as my research topic. My interest in this subject began after I learned of a Sundance film called "Alive Inside". Dan Cohen, the director of this film, is also the founder of a Long Island non-profit, Music & Memory. Cohen's organization distributes iPod's to nursing homes to help patients with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Additional Benefits of Meditation

In addition to the health benefits of meditation, there are countless other ways that the practice of meditation can enrich a persons life. One of these other benefits is the ability to get to know our true selves; through mindful meditation, one can objectively observe themselves and discover blind spots in their vision of themselves and the world around them. Meditation can also improve academic grades; according to a University of California Santa Barbara study, mindful mediation improves cognitive function and can help raise test scores.
